Thrift Trip of the Year

Remember a few weeks ago on Facebook when I mentioned having the most amazing thrifting day ever?  (If you missed that status update, you're clearly missing out on all the thrilling excitement in my life.)  Well, its been almost three weeks and I'm still pinching myself over all the amazing goodies I scored.  My favorite thrift store, Savers, was having a 50% sale, and since I'm never one to miss a good sale, I got up early to beat the crowds.  (For those of you non-thrifters, I am not kidding; there are crowds on thrift store sale days.)  I walked away with 4 skirts, 2 dresses, 2 scarves, and 1 sweater.  And all of the pieces were things I had been looking to add to my wardrobe for fall.  But enough babbling, here are a few quick morning snaps of some of my recent thrift scores...

IMG 0941I snagged this navy and white mid-length striped skirt for $3.  Yes, you read that right, $3.  The length might be awkward for some people, but given my height and love for heels, the skirt hits mid-calf and is a nice change for fall.  I also love the white rope belt, a fun nautical nod for sure!

IMG 0942I also scored this leopard scarf, which is totally different from the other 4 leopard scarves I already own.  Seriously, way different :)  And I finally figured out how to turn standard scarves into infinity scaves, which is making this an even more versatile piece.

IMG 0943I have been loving the bright floral trend for fall, and I've had my eye out for an oh-so-floral dress.  So when I saw this dress, I couldn't believe my thrifting luck.  It was a bit too 80's frilly, but when I paired it with a black blazer, leopard belt, and some big bling, it was just what I'd hoped for.

IMG 0947My scarf collection is always growing, and I loved the bold color and print in this scarf.  It added something extra to an otherwise simple chambray + purple corduroy combo.

IMG 0953This 100% pure silk dress from Talbots was another fabulous find.  The sublte gold and black print is right up my alley, and of course, I added a black blazer, because well, I'm addicted to black blazers.  This dress is actually several sizes too big for me, so I know I always have to wear a belt and blazer with it or get it altered.

IMG 0952So this is obviously not a work outfit (though I do wish oversized sweaters, lounge leggings, and ponytails were allowed at work).  Me and oversized sweaters, well, we kind of have a thing.  So when I saw this dark gray lovely hanging on a rack on the way out, she called to me and the rest was history.  This almost-snuggie ran a whopping $5.  It doesn't get much better than that.

IMG 0965Now might be a good time to mention, I'm already obsessed with the scarf.  I wear it two or three times a week and have to keep myself from wearing it more often.  The skirt is another mid-length skirt.  I think this silhouette works well for me, and though I love me a good pencil skirt, I'm embracing fuller skirts for fall.

IMG 0985And this thrift find is actually from last year, but I scored it during another one of Saver's 50% days.  The plaid is of course classic, and I tried to sass it up with black skinny pants, my beloved Levi's jacket, and oversized gold jewelry.  Oh, and of course, my nerd glasses.  Several people at work asked, "Oh are those new glasses?" to which I replied, "No, I just wear them once in a while."  Translation: they have no prescription and are purely for style purposes.  I may have 20/20 vision, but I don't like to be left out of any accessories :)

So there you have it, the thrift trip of the year!  I'm still working some of the items into my fall wardrobe, and I'll post more pics as I wear things.  I typically have good thrifting karma, but this trip was over the top awesome.  My thrift bar has now been upped.  Bring it, thrifting, bring it.

Thrifted Green Silk + Pastel Nails + Floral Bling

Just popping in to share a recent outfit.  It's been hard to snap outfit pictures since I've been on internship, partly because Matt usually snaps my photos, and also because I typically don't leave work until it's dark outside.  Major bummer for both outfit photos and my sanity lol.  But I managed to snap a few quick (and slightly blurry) Instagram pictures before I left the house on Monday morning, so here you go!

IMG 0501I snagged this green silk blouse several weeks ago while "treasure hunting" at Savers, my favorite thrift store.  I love their store for multiple reasons, and it's rare that I leave there without something.  I've had good luck there with vintage silk blouses, including this green one as well as the printed blouse at the top of this post from November.  I paired it with a pair of black Ann Taylor cigarette pants and black heels.

IMG 0509I am loving the pastel trend this spring, and since I don't have a ton of pastels hanging in my closet, I've been incorporating the pretty palate into my manicures.  This week it's Essie French Affair + Ulta Tutu Cute.  (Sidenote: I've been really happy with Ulta's line of nail polish.  I snagged this bottle when they had a Buy 2, Get 2 Free promotion.)

IMG 0502Did I mention this green gem was $1.99?  That's right...a silk blouse for half the price of your morning latte.  Score!

IMG 0508As I got ready to leave, I thought my outfit needed a little more punch, which reminded me of one of my very favorite pair of earrings.  Bold and blingy, these jeweled lovelies are right up my alley.  I love that they pack a punch without being chandelier style.  I snagged them several years ago at one of those super cheapie jewelry stores (Rue 21 I think?).  I'm sure a few of my coworkers thought I was a bit crazy, but sometimes, I just need to let my Texas shine :)

Anyone else have any favorite thrift or sale finds lately?  If so, leave a link or a comment below and share!  I love hearing the joys of other people's treasure hunts :)

Thrifted Vest

Hey there, long lost readers!  Sorry for my silence lately; things have been a bit crazy lately.  My job has completely consumed my life the past few weeks, and given that I don't get to see Matt on the weekends, I pretty much unplug from the world to focus on spending time with him.

Even in the midst of the craziness, however, I had to pop in and show you all my new favorite thrift find.  Two weekends ago, in honor of MLK Day, our local Savers hosted a 50% sale.  Now I've been resisting some pretty amazing sale emails lately (I'm looking at you Loft and Talbots), but I could not pass up 50% off at my favorite thrift store.  Matt initially tried to protest, but when I gave him the "are you seriously criticizing me for wanting to hit up a thrift store sale" look, he backed off.  Smart move dude; I am not one to miss a Savers sale.  Anyway, about ten seconds after we walked into Savers, I spotted this faux fur lovely, hanging ever so neatly, calling out to me.  I may or may not have squealed when I saw it.  I was certain it was too good to be true, but alas it was not.  It was a fabulous fitting, faux fur find.  (Dare you to say that 3 times fast?)  And to top it off...it was four freaking dollars.  I mean, how can you beat that?

So here it is, my faux fur vest, in its $4 goodness.

IMG 0339Vest: thrifted at Savers
Sweater: Ann Taylor
Leggings: Ann Taylor
Bracelet: Ann Taylor
Ring: David Yurman

PS: Did I mention that I'm pretty sure I tried this exact vest on at the beginning of the season at full price?  I cannot for the life of me remember where I tried it on, and because it's reversable, it doesn't have a tag.  Pretty sure I ended up getting it for about 96% off :)

This past Saturday, I ended up throwing on my beloved vest as Matt and I ate at our favorite local breakfast spot.  Can't get enough of this little furball.

IMG 0344Vest: thrifted at Savers
Flannel: thrifted in college
Tshirt: Gap
Ring: David Yurman

So it's official.  I have a new favorite thrift find   A furry, fabulous, four dollar find.  Freaking love it.

How I Organize and Store My Pretties (With a Quick and Easy DIY)

A few months ago, I showed you guys this quick and easy DIY headband storage system.  Since then, I’ve been dying to show you my jewelry organization system, but with our cross country move, I sort of put it on the backburner.  But now that we’re settled and moved in, backburner be gone!

But before I get to the good stuff, let me tell you a few of my life mantras:

  1. Pretty things should be shown off.
  2. Ordinary things should be stored in pretty things.
  3. You’ll use things more if you can see them.
  4. Home organization should not cost a fortune, unless its Container Store Elfa shelving.  Then I’ll make an exception :)
  5. Have alot of jewelry.  Some of mine is vintage, some is fancy, some is plastic, some is blingy, and some is from Target.  It doesn’t matter where its from, just as long as you love it.

So with those rules in mind, here is how I organize, store, and show off my jewelry…

DSCN3326 This is the wall opposite the mirror in my bathroom.

DSCN3327 Here is one of the three ways I store earrings.  These are for earrings that have a hook back.  I’ll show you how to make this earring frame later in the post.  It’s super simple.

DSCN3330 These hooks are for my necklaces.  There are 3 different “fixtures” here, and I’ll show you each one individually.  I should also mention that every hook, container, and peg you see was purchased secondhand at a flea market, thrift store, or garage sale.  Their are two exceptions which I’ll point out when I show them.

DSCN3333 The top part of the necklace organization is some odd accordion hook thing I found for 50 cents at Goodwill.  I think its original purpose had something to do with laundry drying, though I’m not entirely certain.  It can be stretched or squeezed to almost any length you need, and I wanted mine so I could fit short necklaces on the top row without having them drape too far over the third row of pegs.  This was originally a yucky brown wood color which I spray painted white.

DSCN3332 The second part of the necklace wall is this long row of pegs, which my mom snagged for me at a garage sale for 25 cents.  The wood color was a honey color, so I sprayed it white to match the one above it.  I had originally wanted to hang one necklace per peg, but given my insane amount of jewelry, that idea quickly went out the window, and its been fine doubling and tripling up.

DSCN3335 The third and final part of the necklace storage were these 4 bumblebee hooks, which I found for $1 at a garage sale.  They were too cute to pass up, and I’m so glad I didn’t.  I just staggered them and screwed them into the wall.  Easy peasy.  Originally, I had planned to stop there, but I thought the whole thing looked a little too scattered.  So Matt had a great idea to border the whole thing with this oversized frame I got at a flea market for $1.  It really helped tie the whole thing together, though if you don’t have as many hooks as I do, I think you could skip this step.

DSCN3334 For me, this wall is function and beauty, a rare but fabulous combination!  PS: can I tell you how much I adore that little owl necklace towards the top right corner.  I got it at a market in London with my mom, and it instantly makes me happy when I wear it :)  Another perk of this wall is that I can see it while I’m putting my makeup on and drying my hair.  Therefore, I can think about what I’m wearing that day and what accessories I want to pair with it as I get ready.

DSCN3337 Here is the right side of my bathroom counter.  Like I said above, I believe in storing ordinary things in pretty containers, so my cotton balls and q-tips are stored in glass canisters, my bobby pins and cuticle scissors in a votive holder, and my makeup brushes in a glass beaker (like at the MAC store.)  All of these glass pretties came from Goodwill for under $2.  The ceramic fleur-de-lis holds my hair ties and was purchased from the clearance shelf at Steinmart.  The fleur-de-lis is my sorority’s symbol, so I love finding ways to incorporate it into my stuff.  And of course, I have to have a picture with my fabulous little brother :)

DSCN3340 My cocktail rings are in a vintage ice cream dish found at a flea market, and my “real” jewelry (aka wedding ring, Yurman, diamond studs from Matt, etc.) sits in this crystal ring holder which I picked up for $3 at a consignment show.  My Forever 21 flower bobby pins make a fun little bouquet in a 99 cent Goodwill votive holder.

DSCN3342Here is the left side of my bathroom counter.  My most worn bracelets sit on this velvet lined bracelet holder.  My mom snagged this for me at a garage sale, and I’ve never seen another one since, though my eyes are forever peeled for one.  As you can see, this one is getting a little full :)

DSCN3344 This silver earring frame is made just like the other one I showed you, but this one is for earrings with post backs.  It doesn’t hang on the wall, because you need easy access to the back of the frame to put the earrings on and off the holder.  If you don’t have a ton of earrings, you can totally put post back and hook back earrings on one frame, you just have to deal with a couple of falling hook back earrings every now and then.  The frame is actually plastic and is from the dollar store.

DSCN3343 I got this vintage ashtray from my grandma, though I’ve seen them countless times at thrift stores.  These are for earrings with loop backs.  You know, the ones that hook in and then close shut to form a complete oval.  (Who knew earring terminology was so advanced?)  These have to lay loose because the backs won’t close in the frames I have my other earrings on.  I stuck a candle in the middle, though I don’t light it too often.  I learned my lesson about that here :)

DSCN3345 Ever wonder what to do with all those extra buttons that come with sweaters, blazers, etc?  I place mine in this pretty glass container found at Goodwill.  Easy access when I buy the article of clothing, and easy access should I need the button.  I put this little heart from my mom around the top to make me smile every morning :)  And of course a picture with my bestie is tucked away in the corner!

Sooooo…I realize I have a lot of jewelry, and I realize this whole big thing may not be for everyone, but…perhaps you want to make your own mini version.  And since you’re interested…here’s a quick and easy (I swear its both) tutorial for the earring holders.  I’ve made them several times, and assure you, even the most craft challenged person can do it.  (I know this because I am the most craft challenged person on the planet!)

DSCN2523 Ok…here is what you need.  Frames of whatever shape and size you desire.  These are super cheap at Goodwill and you may even have some laying around your house.  You do NOT need the glass or a mat, so don’t bother paying for that.  And don’t worry about color either, they make paint for that :)  I started out with this leftover can of Gripper paint, but I later switched to spray paint.  I’m inpatient like that.  The key thing you’ll need to buy is the “netting.”  I don’t know what this stuff is really called, but it can be found at your local home improvement mega store in the screen door aisle.  It looks like a giant roll of graph paper, only made out of wire/metal.  They sell it by the roll, but if you’re lucky, you can find a roll that is already open and barter with the guys at the store who wonder what the hell you’re gonna do with it.  I got my already opened and half used roll for $2.  You’ll also need a glue gun, and if you’re working at your kitchen table like me,  you’ll need a dropcloth.  (Note:  this is NOT our table cloth, it is our ugly drop cloth.  Matt paints a lot and therefore ours has a lot of use.)

DSCN2529   Step 1 (which I failed to photograph): Paint the frame.  Step 2: Trace the frame opening onto the mesh/metal screen door stuff.  If your frame doesn’t have the back to it, no worries, just trace the opening to the frame.  When unsure, go a little bigger and trim down as necessary.

DSCN2531 Step 3: Push the mesh/metal screen door stuff into the backside of the frame.  Step 4 (which I did not photograph): Hot glue the shiz out of it.  Lol, I know there are crafty bloggers out there who will hate my directions, but its the best I’ve got.  You won’t see the back so don’t bother making it pretty.  Mine have gobs of glue all over the back and not a soul can tell :)

DSCN3350 Step 5: Hang the newly finished jewelry frame on the wall or leave it free standing like my silver one.  Whichever you prefer and whichever fits with the type of earrings you have.

DSCN3328 Step 6: Hang your favorite jewels from it and enjoy your fabulous pretties!

Seeee, SUPER easy!  If you’re not up for thrift store shopping or if want the instant gratification, you can always find hooks and pegs at Target, Walmart etc.  They’ll be a little more expensive but will also come with less work.

So…I know this was a long post (sorry!) but what do you think?  Anyone going to give it a try??  If you do, PLEASE let me know; I love to hear!  Even better, I’d love to see!  Send me a picture and maybe I’ll post it on my blog!

How do you store your pretties?

Trash to Treasure

I will admit, I'm not exactly the poster child for eco-friendly.  I take 30 minute showers, I run the water when I brush my teeth, I didn't use eco-friendly paint in our apartment, and I only recycle my water bottle if there is a recycling bin within walking distance.  I love the Earth and I'm trying to live more greenly, but it's small steps for me.  (Small is better than none right?)  However, the one thing I absolutely cannot tolerate is people just throwing away their stuff.  It's one of my biggest pet peeves in the world.  I can't stand driving past apartments and seeing couches, bikes, and tables stuffed into the dumpster.  I hate driving through neighborhoods and seeing people throwing away furniture, TVs, sports equipment, etc.  Let me be clear: I understand people wanting to get rid of their things, even if they're in perfectly good shape.  Our tastes change, we get new things, families grow, we change the color scheme of our house.  Sometimes we just don't like things we once did.  I toooootally get that.  But what I don't understand is people who just throw these things away to forever sit in a landfill.  Haven't you ever heard of donating to Goodwill?  Or how about dropping your stuff off at Salvation Army?  Or even better...you could even sell your used things and make money!  And who doesn't want to make a little extra money?

Growing up, we had garage sales at least once or twice a year.  When I'd outgrow clothes or gotten tired of my pink floral bedding and my brother was over his Power Ranger phase, my parents would put out of garage sale signs and set up shop.  And every time we'd finish, we'd take all the money we bought, and buy it on something our family needed.  It didn't just go into savings or grocery money (booooring) it would go into something fun that we'd all get some enjoyment out of.  So it only natural that as I've gotten older (and realized money doesn't grow on trees) that I've turned to reselling my stuff.

When Matt and I moved into together, we were each coming from 2 bedroom apartments and trying to fit into a 2 bedroom for the both of us.  (I realize this should be enough space for 2 people, but we are slightly out of control with the amount of stuff we have.)  I suggested having a garage sale.  Matt said we didn't have enough stuff.  A Saturday afternoon and what felt like three billion customers later, our garage sale was over.  Grand total...are you sitting down?  $1400!  Yep, you read that right, we made $1400 at our garage sale, just selling stuff that we had planned to take to Goodwill.  Crazy I know.  (And yes, I later told Matt "I told you so.")  Also, just this past weekend, I helped my parents at their garage sale, selling stuff that had been in storage while they were in England.  No furniture, just little knicknacks, books, etc.  Grand total for the afternoon?  $600.  Not bad for stuff they had absolutely not interest in keeping anymore.  However, for those of you still skeptical, thinking you don't have enough stuff or don't have a house to have a garage sale, I encourage you to sell your stuff in smaller ways. I recently cleaned out my closet to free up some space and get rid of things I knew I didn't like anymore.  I was on my way to Goodwill to donate the pile of unwanted clothes, but since I passed a Plato's closet on the way, I thought, why not just see if I'll get any money for this stuff.  I walked out of that store with 43 more dollars than when I walked in.  I drove straight to the nail salon and spent that money on a manicure/pedicure.  Not a bad trade if you ask me.  And lastly, don't underestimate Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace.  Matt and I decided to get rid of one of our couches, so I thought I'd post it both places to see if there was any interest.  Within 4 hours of posting it, I had 9 emails and 5 Facebook messages.  We sold it that afternoon and it was loaded up the next weekend.  Hellloooo extra (and easy) cash!

So for all of you out there who think you don't have enough stuff to donate or sell, or think it's too much trouble to have a garage sale or that its takes too much time to post an ad to Craigslist, I say think again.  You never know what you'll get for the stuff you don't want!

Treasure Hunting in a Recession

Ok, I've never actually admitted this to the masses before, but today, I'm feeling called to do so. Brace yourself, here I go: I am a lover of garage sales. There, I said it. Four years ago, the thought of going to a garage sale kind of creeped me out; something about rooting through other people's things just seemed kind of...odd I guess. But three years ago, my attitudes totally changed, as I found myself ready to move into my first "grown up" apartment. No Kappa house, no college roommates to split house furnishing responsibilities, just me and my things. Problem was, I didn't really have a lot of things.

So, after graduation, I moved home to Houston with my parents for two months before I began graduate school. That summer, my mom and I gave garage sales a try. Every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday morning, we'd wake up at the crack of dawn and hit the streets to see what we could find. It wasn't long before we realized, omg, people are selling stuff we need, want and love! Sure, they are tired of their kitchen table, but its perfect for me. Sure, people no longer want those dishes/frames/lamps/shelves etc., but I do! My mom and I got hooked pretty quickly, and we began to call our early morning trips "treasure hunting," and we soon expanded to thrift stores, antique sales, and flea markets. (Note: I have my limits, as I don't do clothes or shoes during these treasure hunting trips, I'm not that adventurous, and don't really want to be). Never quite knowing what to expect when you pulled out of the garage that morning made the finds even more thrilled. So without fail, I furnished my ENTIRE first grown up apartment (excluding my bed, couch and linens) with all garage sale/flea market/thrift store finds. For those of you still doubting how cute this could possibly be pulled off, please see the pic below of my Shabby Chic grown up apartment (pre-Matt).

Sooo, after 2 years of being on two different continents, my mom and I resumed our treasure hunting this morning, and let me assure you, after our first big find, I had my groove back and was looking for my next big fix. I forgot how much the treasure hunt got me going! And in this economy, who can afford to snub their nose at saving money? Still not certain treasure hunting is for you, check out my mom and I's loot from this morning's hunt:
  • Hanging wall mirror $1
  • Leopard lamp and shade $1
  • Smaller lamp with white shade $2
  • 2 fall glass votive holders $1
  • Baking cookbook $1
  • 2 vintage necklaces $5
  • Christmas wine charms $0.50
  • Honeysuckle candle (new of course) $1
  • Cinnamon spice candle (new) $0.50
  • 2 red glitter Christmas candles $2
  • Wooden 10 votive candle holder $8 (my mom and I saw this at a flea market for $50)
  • Wire basket $0.25
  • Stationary set $0.25
  • Fall candle wreaths (3) $1
  • Christmas ornaments (box of 18) $0.50
  • Cinnamon votives $0.10
  • Vanilla votives $0.25
  • OU Sooner platter $10 (at Tuesday morning)
So, all these garage sale treasures for a grand total of...$25.35 ($35.35 if you count the platter). I mean, how can you beat that?! So for all those having to cut back these days, I dare you to try treasure hunting. You won't be disappointed.
