Prettying Up Our Patio for Spring

In my last post, I mentioned that Matt and I spent most of last weekend prettying up our patio for spring.  Our apartment is pretty small, so we love when the weather warms up and we get to add another room to our house.  Since we moved to Chicago two years ago, our patio has served its function, but once we decided that we're not quite ready to buy a house and are going to be renters for a bit longer, we decided to pretty up our patio to help us enjoy our place a little more.  Here's a before picture of our cozy little patio...

3310620Keep in mind, our patio has just been through a Chicago winter, also known as the kiss of death for anything green, living, or healthy :)  And now for a few after pictures...

4010640Much better, right?  We weren't working with a big budget, so we tried to be strategic, adding pops of color with new seat cushions, fresh flowers from Home Depot, a few fun accessories throughout.

P4010638Though we've been known to get in a little over our heads at Home Depot, this year we kept it simple with single plant pots in bright and cheery colors.  This orange and blue combo might be one of my favorites!

P4010637This cheapie plant stand houses our tiny, but efficient herb garden and our small supply of firewood.  Usually the wood has emptied out by now, but given our pretty mild winter, we've still got a bit of our stash left over.  And though the larger purple plant on the bottom left was our biggest Home Depot splurge ($15), I really love how full it is.  A little different from the small blue bud, just below it.  It still has some growing to do :)

4010629If you're someone who enjoys cooking with fresh herbs, I strongly encourage you to grow your own, even if you have a tiny space like us.  A small bunch of basil or rosemary can cost you several dollars at the store, and for the same price, you can plant your own that will keep you stocked all spring and summer long.  I mentioned these signs last year, and I still love the detail they give to our small but mighty herb box.  Oh the treasures that can be found inside the Target Dollar Bins :)

3310624And for another before picture, check out this little chicken I snagged for $2 at a garage sale.  (Ok, in truth, it was priced at $3, but I haggled the lady down to $2.  I know, I am such a bargain hunter!)  When I saw it, I thought it would be an adorable planter, with a few changes of course.

P4010632A few coats of spray paint and some fresh flowers later, this chickadee was loving his life as a new planter!

4010633The wall art was one of the hardest things for us to find, and after looking at several predictable wrought iron pieces and not really liking them, we stumbled upon these textured metal pieces and fell in love.  We actually found them in the table bowls and baskets section of Garden Ridge, but after a few screws and hooks, they were on the wall, adding just the right amount of affordable oomph to the space.

P4010646We added three hanging baskets to the space, creating interest by hanging them a bit unbalanced with two on one side, one on the other.

P4010657And given how much we love our new space, we couldn't bare the thought of only using it during the day light.  So we added a string of globe lights that give off just the right amount of twinkle!  And because I enjoy a good before and after, here's another before picture...

3310621And of course, here's another after...

4010639A definite improvement, don't you think?  And for us, definite proof that you don't have to own a home to create and warm and cozy outdoor space.  Sometimes, I think as renters, we have a tendency to constantly say, "One day, when we have a house..." blah blah blah.  But sometimes, it's nice to just say, let's make the most of what we have, right here, right now.  And last weekend, that's just what we did with our tiny but lovely little patio.

Anyone else out there readying your outdoor space for spring?  If so, leave a comment or link in the comments; I'd love to pop over and check it out!

Exciting News!

Chicago{we heart it}

Happy Monday, pretty friends! Today I am excited because I finally get to share Matt and I's exciting news with you. I've been holding onto this news since last Monday, in an attempt to talk to all our friends and family before I talked about it on the blog. I still have a few friends I haven't been able to get a hold of yet, but a week is entirely too long for me to keep quiet on good news :)

Over the past month or so, Matt has been interviewing for a full-time, long-term job in Chicago, and last Monday, my sweet husband got word that he got the job!  This means that we are staying in Chicago.  Eeeek!  Our excitement and happiness is literally overwhelming; its hard to put into words.  Chicago is going to be our permanent home.

When Matt and I started this whole Ph.D journey thing, I don't think either of us knew what we were getting ourselves into.  Though we met each other as well as some fabulous friends in graduate school, the five-going-on-six-year process has been filled with a lot of uncertainty and hoop jumping.  Its felt like an Olympic hurdle event, only forget the 100 meter hurdles, this has been the 100 mile hurdles!  In addition to small hurdles (prelims, dissertation proposals and defenses, final exams, yearly reviews...) there has been the looming hurdle of what will happen when we're "done."  What route will we go, will we get a postdoc, where will we end up, what will our focus be?  These questions exist for everyone in our program, and trying to do this process with two people, well, that's been a second Olympic event in itself.  We've wondered how we'll manage the search process with both of us looking, who will take the lead, who will have to sacrifice the most, how will be deal with compromising when we've both given so much of ourselves the past 5 years to get through this program?  We've tried our best to focus on the present and not get ahead of ourselves, but that's easier said than done (especially for the planner-crazed me.)

But with this news, so many of our questions and prayers our answered.  So many of our fears have subsided.  We have a place to call home, we have some stability in this process, we can finally think about timelines and plans.  We finally know where HOME is going to be!  I will still have to complete my internship next year, and we're certain we'll be apart for this, as I didn't apply anywhere in the Chicago area.  Several of my options are close enough for weekend drives or short flights home, so we'll get through that just fine.  And knowing after that one year, we know where we'll be and we'll be together, that is beyond exciting!

In June, we thought this move to Chicago was just for a year, and then we got here and fell completely in love with this city.  And now, we get to call it home for years and years to come.  How blessed are we?  I've had a hard time putting my excitement into words, but the quick email I sent to Matt last week says it best:

"It is starting to hit me today.  We are staying in Chicago.  We are starting a life here.  We get to go apple picking for five more years.  We get to host friends.  We get to enjoy picnics in the summer. We get to ride the train.  We get to have a baby or two here.  We get to start our careers here.  We get to grow our marriage here.  We get to do it all, together, in Chicago.  I am so happy."

I'm so proud of my incredibly smart and talented husband for snagging this job, and I'm so excited to see what the future holds for us in Chicago.  Thanks for stopping by today to share our news and happiness with us.  Chicago, we're here to stay!

Our Christmas Mantel

I just wanted to pop in for a bit this morning/afternoon to show you a quick peek at Matt and I's Christmas mantle.  (I say "Matt and I" because we both pay rent here, not because we both put love and care into creating this Christmas mantle.  Matt laid on the couch while I worked lol.)  This is one of the many times I wish I had a fancy pants camera to capture all the fun details, but alas, all I have is my little point and shoot camera.  I coyly asked Matt when we could upgrade to a nice camera, and he answered "when we have kids."  And because I enjoy sleeping through the night, not having spit up on me, and talking about adult things, I will happily enjoy my point and shoot for several more years :)  On to our Christmas mantel...

DSCN4022.JPGThis year, when I pulled our our Christmas decorations, I made myself one promise.  I was going to make do with what we already had.  No running out to the store, no swearing I needed that "perfect" ribbon.  Whatever we had is whatever I was going to use.  That mentality seemed to push me to try a few options I may not have initially considered, and I'm so happy I stuck to my promise.  Last month I showed you our fall mantel, and you may see a few similarities.  The colors are different and there is certainly more sparkle, but it has a lot of the same "bones" as our fall mantel.  Big mirror and wreath combo, filled glass canisters, candles, and a word frame.  With no garage and little storage, I keep the same basics, but revamp the details.

DSCN4024.JPGI filled three different glass canisters/vases with a mix of silver and red ornaments.  A mix of big and small, glittered and shiny helped keep it from being too matchy matchy.  I picked up the little silver bead wreaths after Christmas with my mom last year for 75% off.  The garland was something I wasn't quite sure how it would work when I started it, but it ended up looking a little bit crazy, a little bit fun, which is always a good combo in my book.  (I mean, isn't that what we all love about Anthropologie?  A mix of crazy and fun that seems to look effortless.)  The small glitter ornaments came from Target's dollar bin, and I strung them up with some ribbon I snagged at the end of the season last year.

DSCN4028.JPGI love having a word mixed in with my decorations.  Matt wanted to use wrapping paper in the frame (ok, I don't give him enough credit, he does care a little bit) which we tried for a few days.  But then I got my way and switched it up for a word.  "Believe" is so fitting for Christmas, and I love the glittered Santa hanging close by.  (I picked up several twin Santas from the dollar bin at Target to use as finishing touches on presents, but when I hung him here on a whim, I loved it!)  The garland came from the bottom of our Christmas tree, which had to be cut down to fit into our tiny apartment.  I asked the guys at the tree place to tie up the scraps and though there weren't a lot left over, it was just the right amount for our little mantel.

DSCN4029.JPGI saw a feather wreath last year in a magazine and have been wanting one ever since.  I found the styrofoam wreath form at a garage sale for 10 cents and the feather boa for 25 cents.  (Big spender I tell you.)  I wrapped it around the form, secured it with a few straight pins, and voila, fun feather wreath.  I added a few silver ornaments from our tree as well as some of the butterfly clips that we use on our tree.  PS: After I wrapped the wreath and tied it to the mirror, Matt made a face.  You know, a scrunched up, what the heck is that face.  "What?" I asked.  His reply?  "That looks like Big Bird's butt."  To which I maturely said, "Your face looks like Big Bird's butt!"  Total maturity around here people :)

DSCN4025.JPGSo there you have it, our Christmas mantel!  I love the way it turned out, and for free no less.  PS: If you've decorated for the holidays and posted about it, leave me a link in the comments so I can come check it out!  Have a great Wednesday yall!

Fall Mantel and an OOTD

Hey there lovelies, happy Monday (almost Tuesday!) I hope everyone had a nice Halloween weekend. Mine was pretty uneventful: Matt was out of town and I worked most of the weekend. (Most of the weekend meaning Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, ha!) Since I don't have kiddos to get trick-or-treat ready, I volunteered to work so the moms with little ones could focus on costumes, candy corn, and caramel apples. But just about the time I got home from work last night, Matt got in from the airport, so we managed a little festivity with homemade chili and "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown."  And maybe a few handful of mini Butterfingers between the two of us :)

Even though I wasn't able to get too much into the Halloween spirit, that doesn't mean I've been lacking in the fall spirit!  I have been meaning to show you my little fall mantle for weeks now, but I kept wanting to get a better picture of it.  But since that didn't happen, here's an quick picture of our apartment's little slice of fall...

DSCN3837.JPG

For years I've stored up holiday decorations like an acorn hoarding squirrel, but unfortunately, when we moved from Texas, I lost the ability to store holiday decorations at my parents house.  (Ok, I lie, they are actually still sitting at my parents house, but I lost the ability to store them, use them for a month, then restore them if you know what I mean.)  Shucks.  So, when we moved, all I brought with me were two measely bins of Christmas decor.  Two bins Christmas, no bins fall.  Grr.  So my goals for this fall mantle: cheap, easy, and not too over the top.  I had two hours to buy and assemble everything, and I wanted to keep it under $20.  So after a quick trip to the Dollar Store and Big Lots, I came up with this.  Because our apartment is pretty small, I just focused on the manel.  (I call this all in one spot tactic the "pack the punch approach.")  Another trick for the budget conscious apartment dweller is to use glass containers (vases, jars, cylinders, etc) because they can be incorporated during every season with different filler.  (Trust me,  you'll see these same lovelies at Christmas filled with red berries or silver jingle bells.)  Quick, easy and cost effective.  Hooray for all three!

And here is a quick half OOTD shot from this past week...

DSCN3895.JPGBlazer: The Limited
Sweater: Banana Republic
Jeans: J.Crew
Belt: Ann Taylor
Scarf: from a London market excursion with my mom

This outfit is indicative of two recent things for me: bolder color combos (navy, mustard, and leopard) and adding an extra item before I leave the house.  I originally was going without the scarf, but to get into the full fall fashion mode, I've been pushing myself to layer more and add an extra piece before I leave in the morning.  Whether its a scarf, a layered tee, a belt, or another stack of bracelets, I'm working to add another layer.  And so far, I'm really liking the effect.  My outfits have felt much more layered and luxe.

So tell me, how was your weekend, whatcha got going on this week?  Anyone else trying to add an extra layer before you leave the house?

How I Organize and Store My Pretties (With a Quick and Easy DIY)

A few months ago, I showed you guys this quick and easy DIY headband storage system.  Since then, I’ve been dying to show you my jewelry organization system, but with our cross country move, I sort of put it on the backburner.  But now that we’re settled and moved in, backburner be gone!

But before I get to the good stuff, let me tell you a few of my life mantras:

  1. Pretty things should be shown off.
  2. Ordinary things should be stored in pretty things.
  3. You’ll use things more if you can see them.
  4. Home organization should not cost a fortune, unless its Container Store Elfa shelving.  Then I’ll make an exception :)
  5. Have alot of jewelry.  Some of mine is vintage, some is fancy, some is plastic, some is blingy, and some is from Target.  It doesn’t matter where its from, just as long as you love it.

So with those rules in mind, here is how I organize, store, and show off my jewelry…

DSCN3326 This is the wall opposite the mirror in my bathroom.

DSCN3327 Here is one of the three ways I store earrings.  These are for earrings that have a hook back.  I’ll show you how to make this earring frame later in the post.  It’s super simple.

DSCN3330 These hooks are for my necklaces.  There are 3 different “fixtures” here, and I’ll show you each one individually.  I should also mention that every hook, container, and peg you see was purchased secondhand at a flea market, thrift store, or garage sale.  Their are two exceptions which I’ll point out when I show them.

DSCN3333 The top part of the necklace organization is some odd accordion hook thing I found for 50 cents at Goodwill.  I think its original purpose had something to do with laundry drying, though I’m not entirely certain.  It can be stretched or squeezed to almost any length you need, and I wanted mine so I could fit short necklaces on the top row without having them drape too far over the third row of pegs.  This was originally a yucky brown wood color which I spray painted white.

DSCN3332 The second part of the necklace wall is this long row of pegs, which my mom snagged for me at a garage sale for 25 cents.  The wood color was a honey color, so I sprayed it white to match the one above it.  I had originally wanted to hang one necklace per peg, but given my insane amount of jewelry, that idea quickly went out the window, and its been fine doubling and tripling up.

DSCN3335 The third and final part of the necklace storage were these 4 bumblebee hooks, which I found for $1 at a garage sale.  They were too cute to pass up, and I’m so glad I didn’t.  I just staggered them and screwed them into the wall.  Easy peasy.  Originally, I had planned to stop there, but I thought the whole thing looked a little too scattered.  So Matt had a great idea to border the whole thing with this oversized frame I got at a flea market for $1.  It really helped tie the whole thing together, though if you don’t have as many hooks as I do, I think you could skip this step.

DSCN3334 For me, this wall is function and beauty, a rare but fabulous combination!  PS: can I tell you how much I adore that little owl necklace towards the top right corner.  I got it at a market in London with my mom, and it instantly makes me happy when I wear it :)  Another perk of this wall is that I can see it while I’m putting my makeup on and drying my hair.  Therefore, I can think about what I’m wearing that day and what accessories I want to pair with it as I get ready.

DSCN3337 Here is the right side of my bathroom counter.  Like I said above, I believe in storing ordinary things in pretty containers, so my cotton balls and q-tips are stored in glass canisters, my bobby pins and cuticle scissors in a votive holder, and my makeup brushes in a glass beaker (like at the MAC store.)  All of these glass pretties came from Goodwill for under $2.  The ceramic fleur-de-lis holds my hair ties and was purchased from the clearance shelf at Steinmart.  The fleur-de-lis is my sorority’s symbol, so I love finding ways to incorporate it into my stuff.  And of course, I have to have a picture with my fabulous little brother :)

DSCN3340 My cocktail rings are in a vintage ice cream dish found at a flea market, and my “real” jewelry (aka wedding ring, Yurman, diamond studs from Matt, etc.) sits in this crystal ring holder which I picked up for $3 at a consignment show.  My Forever 21 flower bobby pins make a fun little bouquet in a 99 cent Goodwill votive holder.

DSCN3342Here is the left side of my bathroom counter.  My most worn bracelets sit on this velvet lined bracelet holder.  My mom snagged this for me at a garage sale, and I’ve never seen another one since, though my eyes are forever peeled for one.  As you can see, this one is getting a little full :)

DSCN3344 This silver earring frame is made just like the other one I showed you, but this one is for earrings with post backs.  It doesn’t hang on the wall, because you need easy access to the back of the frame to put the earrings on and off the holder.  If you don’t have a ton of earrings, you can totally put post back and hook back earrings on one frame, you just have to deal with a couple of falling hook back earrings every now and then.  The frame is actually plastic and is from the dollar store.

DSCN3343 I got this vintage ashtray from my grandma, though I’ve seen them countless times at thrift stores.  These are for earrings with loop backs.  You know, the ones that hook in and then close shut to form a complete oval.  (Who knew earring terminology was so advanced?)  These have to lay loose because the backs won’t close in the frames I have my other earrings on.  I stuck a candle in the middle, though I don’t light it too often.  I learned my lesson about that here :)

DSCN3345 Ever wonder what to do with all those extra buttons that come with sweaters, blazers, etc?  I place mine in this pretty glass container found at Goodwill.  Easy access when I buy the article of clothing, and easy access should I need the button.  I put this little heart from my mom around the top to make me smile every morning :)  And of course a picture with my bestie is tucked away in the corner!

Sooooo…I realize I have a lot of jewelry, and I realize this whole big thing may not be for everyone, but…perhaps you want to make your own mini version.  And since you’re interested…here’s a quick and easy (I swear its both) tutorial for the earring holders.  I’ve made them several times, and assure you, even the most craft challenged person can do it.  (I know this because I am the most craft challenged person on the planet!)

DSCN2523 Ok…here is what you need.  Frames of whatever shape and size you desire.  These are super cheap at Goodwill and you may even have some laying around your house.  You do NOT need the glass or a mat, so don’t bother paying for that.  And don’t worry about color either, they make paint for that :)  I started out with this leftover can of Gripper paint, but I later switched to spray paint.  I’m inpatient like that.  The key thing you’ll need to buy is the “netting.”  I don’t know what this stuff is really called, but it can be found at your local home improvement mega store in the screen door aisle.  It looks like a giant roll of graph paper, only made out of wire/metal.  They sell it by the roll, but if you’re lucky, you can find a roll that is already open and barter with the guys at the store who wonder what the hell you’re gonna do with it.  I got my already opened and half used roll for $2.  You’ll also need a glue gun, and if you’re working at your kitchen table like me,  you’ll need a dropcloth.  (Note:  this is NOT our table cloth, it is our ugly drop cloth.  Matt paints a lot and therefore ours has a lot of use.)

DSCN2529   Step 1 (which I failed to photograph): Paint the frame.  Step 2: Trace the frame opening onto the mesh/metal screen door stuff.  If your frame doesn’t have the back to it, no worries, just trace the opening to the frame.  When unsure, go a little bigger and trim down as necessary.

DSCN2531 Step 3: Push the mesh/metal screen door stuff into the backside of the frame.  Step 4 (which I did not photograph): Hot glue the shiz out of it.  Lol, I know there are crafty bloggers out there who will hate my directions, but its the best I’ve got.  You won’t see the back so don’t bother making it pretty.  Mine have gobs of glue all over the back and not a soul can tell :)

DSCN3350 Step 5: Hang the newly finished jewelry frame on the wall or leave it free standing like my silver one.  Whichever you prefer and whichever fits with the type of earrings you have.

DSCN3328 Step 6: Hang your favorite jewels from it and enjoy your fabulous pretties!

Seeee, SUPER easy!  If you’re not up for thrift store shopping or if want the instant gratification, you can always find hooks and pegs at Target, Walmart etc.  They’ll be a little more expensive but will also come with less work.

So…I know this was a long post (sorry!) but what do you think?  Anyone going to give it a try??  If you do, PLEASE let me know; I love to hear!  Even better, I’d love to see!  Send me a picture and maybe I’ll post it on my blog!

How do you store your pretties?

Sweet Home CHICAGO! Move Updates and an OOTD

il_430xN.116566560_large {we heart it}

Hi, hello, we made it, we’re here, we’re in CHICAGO, woo hoooo!  So sorry I am just now getting to posting; I know I promised a quick check in Monday, but clearly that did not happen as its FRIDAY night and I’m just now posting.  However, we made it, and I have so much to tell you!  (Ok, not so much as in “so exciting,” just so much as in “random things I feel the need to share” haha.)  I started out the move quite enthusiastically in terms of photo taking, plans to blog about the process, etc. and about three hours into the anxiety filled drive, I kind of gave up.  (We had a disaster with our U-Haul experience; they messed up our reservation, failed to tell us neither of our cars could be towed behind the U-Haul, and our truck drove at a diagonal.  No joke.  A good 25-30 degree diagonal.  It looked like the truck was skidding off of the road the entire 18 hour drive.  It was terrible, and we will never ever ever use that company again.  Ever.)  Anyway, here are some random snapshots and descriptions about the move process and what’s been happening since we got to Chicagoland!  (And um, people really do say “Chicagoland” here, which to me, is kind of hilarious, as it sounds strikingly similar to Candyland.  Right?  Candyland, Chicagoland.  Just saying.)  Anyway…onto the move :)

DSCN2673 Here we are with our diagonal driving U-Haul, ready to head out of town early on Friday morning! The truck was a 26 footer, made to move a family in a four bedroom house.  We have a 2 bedroom and packed the thing to the brim.  What can I say?  We have a lot of crap stuff :)

DSCN2674 Last skinny vanilla latte in my old home!

DSCN2678 Aaaaaand we’re off!  And yes, I realize this picture is both dorky and dangerous, and well, I’m embracing both.  (But for realz, there wasn’t anyone near me on the road, it was 7 am, and I had a ten hour day one drive ahead of me.  I mean, what else was I supposed to do?!)

DSCN2686 Day 2 (hence the hand signal, not to be mistaken for a peace sign.)  After a night stop off in Springfield, Missouri, we finished the second leg of our journey with an eight hour drive.  Here I am following behind Matt/our diagonal driving semi truck and taking self portrait pictures.  (Yes Mom, I know this was not smart, I won’t do if again!)  We arrived in Chicago early Saturday evening, found a hotel close to our apartment (we moved in the next morning), and grabbed wings while watching the NBA playoffs.  (Poor Phoenix.)  The next morning, we got the keys to our new home, turned the lock, and moved in.  Eeek!  I had planned to snap a key turning video, but between my exhaustion and the fact that I looked ten times more mousy and scary than in the photo above, the key turning video and move in day photos were a no go.

DSCN1929 And to celebrate our first night as official Candyland Chicagoland residents, we enjoyed deep dish pizza from Lou Malnati’s.  I have a feeling I’m going to need to get my butt back to the gym very soon with this place so close by.

Monday was spent unpacking, unpacking, and you guessed it,  unpacking.  Though I kept breaking down boxes, I felt like I wasn’t even making a dent.  But, at the moment, we’ve only got 5 boxes left, and most of them are my jewelry and handbags, so they’ll take a while to sort through.  Tuesday morning, I got up bright and early for, guess what…an interview!  Woo hoo!  Quick story needed.  Remember last week when I posted this about worrying, especially about finding a job in our new city?  Well, an hour after I posted that, I got a call from a potential job opportunity.  The woman did a quick phone interview, and then scheduled an in-person interview for Tuesday.  Then two days after that, I found out I didn’t get the job I interviewed for back in April.  Some good news, some bad news, all within a short time after deliberately deciding not to worry for one whole day.  So for me, it was really a symbol that when you let go of stuff, stop worrying, and start living in the present, things seem to just happen.  Such a good reminder :)

Anyway, my interview Tuesday morning went well, and hooray, I got the job!  It isn’t in my field, it’s not full time, and it isn’t really utilizing my Ph.D coursework.  Any guesses what it is?  (Short pause for those of you who want to guess…)  If you guessed retail, you guessed right :)  Sure its not in my field, but its at a store I love, its working with people, it pays,  it gives me time to work on my dissertation, and its something to get me out and about in my new city.  No complaints here.  I’m still looking for something at a college/university, but for now, I’m pretty pumped to do something different, much lower stress than my previous position, and something that gives me a huge shopping discount :)  For now, I’m going to hold off talking about where I’m working, not because it’s a secret, but more because I don’t want this blog to turn into an unofficial poster child for this retailer.  Its a retailer I’ve blogged about before and one that is well represented in my closet.  I’m sure many of you will be able to guess the store as I continue doing OOTD posts, especially since my discount will mean a larger representation of the retailer in my closet.  Hopefully my husband is not reading this, as I promised him I wouldn’t spend my whole paychecks before I walked out of work :)

After the interview, we headed to Ikea for some mass houseware shopping.  I figured I’d snap a few OOTD pics since my interview was the first time in several days I’d worn real clothes or makeup :)

Dress: Banana Republic

Cardigan: Ann Taylor

Shoes: Kenneth Cole; I actually wore the BCBG heels from this post to the interview

Necklace: vintage

Earrings: my wedding day gift from Matt

Shades: Juicy Couture

Coffee: Starbucks non-fat mocha  :)

Normally, I would be in a full suit for an interview, but since this was  a retail position, I really wanted to dress in the retailers style.  My thought was, if I can look like I walked out of their catalog, then it will easy for them to see that I’d be a natural fit for their team.  I had training last night, and work my first real shift tomorrow afternoon.  Woo hoo.  “Can I start you a fitting room?”  (Just practicing!) :)

If you’re still reading this, thanks for hanging with me.  I’m gone from Candyland blogland for a week, and then there’s just so much to catch up on!  We had a really full and fun day in the city yesterday and I’ m still trying to go through all my pics from our outing.  Hopefully I’ll have them up later this weekend.  Thank you all for your incredible words of support and encouragement throughout this move process.  I can’t tell you how much it has meant to me and how many times I’ve reread your comments for assurance that all would be ok.  You all rock beyond words, and I’m excited for a new twist in this blog as we explore and fall in love with Candyland together :)

Have a fabulous weekend!

In This Place

4506250952_472175565f_large {we heart it}

The boxes are taped, the truck is loaded, our bags our packed.  We’re spending the night at a friend’s house and then heading out on our new adventure bright and early tomorrow.  This morning, after our sweet friends and moving crew were gone, I looked around at our empty apartment with a mix of emotions.  For the past four years, this place has been home, and looking at the bare walls and empty rooms, I couldn’t help but think about all that has happened in this place.

In this place, I moved out on my own for the first time,
lived in a pink paradise shoebox apartment,
and found out all the expenses that come with being a “grown up.”

In this place, I met my wonderful husband,
some fabulous friends,
and the world’s greatest boss and friend.

In this place, I followed my heart,
learned a lot about making my own path,
and becoming my own person.

In this place, I got more interested in fashion,
taking greater risks and chances with my closet,
because I figured no one in this small town would notice if I looked like I got dressed in the dark.

In this place, I began to truly value my high school friends,
as people who know the real me and take me as I am,
no matter how much time or distance stands between us.

In this place, I learned getting a Ph.D is a challenge,
its brought incredible growth, life lessons, and self discovery,
as well as some crazy naysayers and people who I can’t wait to prove wrong.

In this place, I’ve met found a passion for working with college students,
been blessed to teach some incredible young people,
and been equally blessed to have learned so much from them.

In this place, I’ve had countless laughs,
took thousands of pictures,
and made millions of memories.

In this place, I have changed,
grown,
and been impacted by some really fabulous people.

So as we prepare to head out on our new adventure, I am thoughtful and thankful about all that has happened here in this place, and I am eager for all the new memories that await us.

In our new place.

*We’ll be on the road for the next few days, but hopefully I’ll be able to snag some internet at our hotels.  At the latest, I’ll be back on Monday with an arrival update and some pictures from along the way.  Have a fabulous weekend, dear friends!

Back from My World Tour

tumblr_kv0xt4tFY01qzmg2ao1_400_large {we heart it}

You may have noticed that I’ve been a bad blogger lately (at least by my standards.)  That last post about blazers literally took me a week to piece together, having 5 seconds here, 5 seconds there.  But in the past two weeks, I have literally been around the world and back.  Ok, maybe not literally “around the world,” but it sure as heck has felt that way.  You already know about Matt and I’s trip to Philly, but after that, we flew to Houston, to Chicago, back to Houston, drove to Dallas, and finally, late Sunday afternoon, we made it home.  All of this in the span of just over a week and a half.  Exhausting to say the least.  I have never been so happy to turn the key in the front door of Matt and I’s shoebox of an apartment than I was on Sunday.  But, even with all the craziness, Matt and I managed to have a really good time in every country city on our “world tour.”

After Philly and a quick one night layover in Houston, we flew to Chicago for several days in hopes of finding our new home.  (We are moving to Chicago at the end of this semester.  You can read more about it here and here.)  After a few fights over city vs. suburb and some unnecessarily dramatic tears from me , Matt and I finally decided to live in the burbs.  Slight groan, I know, but I think it is going to be the best choice for us, given that Matt’s job is closer to the suburbs and that we’d like to have a place big enough for friends and family to shack up with us when my visit Chicago.

DSCN1919 We were so lucky to be able to stay with our friends, Matt and Christie (smiling above), in Chicago who have a chic little brownstone in Lincoln Park.  They are so generous in letting us shack up with them when we visit, particularly because my suitcase tends to explode in their dining room the minute we arrive.  (Read about our last shack up with them here.)  The night Matt and I got in, the four of went to watch a performance by Vintage Theater Collective, started by one of Christie’s dear friends and a girl I grew up going to school with.  I really enjoyed it, and it got good reviews in the Chicago Reader (congrats Katy!)  Here are Matt and Christie smiling on the way home, indulging their touristy friend who has to take pictures everywhere we go :)

DSCN1931 The next day Matt and I went apartment hunting, and though we’d allotted three full days to find a place, we were so blessed to find our new home after only 5 stops!  We absolutely ADORE it, and we were so lucky because it came with an extra cherry on top.  We were scheduled to have our current apartment through August, so were planning to pay double rent for a few months once we’d moved to Chicago.  Matt random noticed a familiar logo on the door of the office when we walked it, and it turns out that they are owned by the same company who owns our current apartment.  So what’s the cherry on top?  Because its the same company, we were able to get out of our lease early, no penalties!  Woo hoo, hooray!  It literally could not have worked out better.  (And don’t be fooled by the picture above, our apartment isn’t downtown, I just snapped this pic while we were out in the city.)

DSCN1954 I am beyond excited to decorate a new space, and I will post tons of pictures as we move and transform our new little home.  If it were up to me, it would be a shabby chic wonderland, but I have a husband who cares about the space he lives in, so we’ll go for more of a hotel chic look.  At least that’s my plan :)  The kitchen might be my favorite part of the apartment due to the stainless steel appliances.  The place we’re in now has appliances from the stone age, so I am thrilled with these babies.  Other bonuses include a wood burning fireplace, a stackable washer/dryer, giant walk in closets, a patio, 2 bathrooms (a relationship saver), and a big storage locker for all my Christmas decorations :)

DSCN1923 That night we went to Goose Island Brewery with our friends Matt and Christie to celebrate our new home.  (The picture I posted in my blazer post is from there as well.)  Please excuse my gigantic self in this pic, lol.  I had on my mega tall boots that night, which apparently make me look like a woman capable of making it into the Guinness Book of World Records for world’s tallest freak woman!

DSCN1926 The next day Matt and I went downtown to check out the green river.  Every Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day, the city of Chicago dyes the Chicago River green.  We didn’t make it there till the Wednesday after, so to me, it just looked dirty.  But next year, we’ll make sure to see it on its unveiling day.  (Since we’ll be living in Chicago and all!) I don’t ever get sick of saying that :)

DSCN1929 We headed to Lou Malnatis for some famous deep dish pizza.  This is known to be one of the best places for deep dish pizza, and it did not disappoint.  It was also completely fat free ;)

DSCN1936 That night we headed to Tarantino’s for appetizers and drinks.  They had off the chart kind-of-martinis (they weren’t as strong as typical martinis, thankfully) and these delicious fried oysters.  Though this blog might not seem like it, I swear I do more with my life than eat.

DSCN1944 Christie made a lovely toast cheersing (is that a word?) to Chicago, our newest home.  I can’t wait see what the windy city brings us!

DSCN1963 Buuuut our trip didn’t end there.  We flew into Houston, grabbed lunch with my mom, and then headed up to Dallas for my best friend, Jordan, and her fiancĂ©'s engagement party.  Matt and I arrived feeling a bit like travel-crazed, sleep deprived zombies, but we wouldn’t have missed this party for anything!  Jordan and I are obsessed with getting our makeup done at MAC, and the engagement party was the perfect excuse to stop in and get our makeup done (and take picture while doing so.)

DSCN1969 Sweet Matt and I at the party.  I really have an incredible husband :)

DSCN1967 I am so excited to stand next to Jordan as she marries her man next year.  Oh and ps, just call me  the friendly ghost :)

DSCN1976  Me and my almost-mommy friend, Kendall.  I blogged about her baby shower here and still cannot believe she is about to have her very own, real life, handsome prince, baby boy.  Eeek!

DSCN2002-1 My best friend Steven finally arrived and our high school group was complete (minus Adrienne, we missed you Adge!)  I seriously adore these people for who they are and all the joy the bring into my life.

DSCN1977 The party was tons of fun, and by the end of the night, my stomach hurt from laughing so much.  I have really cool friends.  It’s a fact.  They’re really cool.

Allison 2 After I posted this post (redundant much?) this picture was emailed to me and I love it too much not to share it!

DSCN2007 The next morning Matt and I got up bright and early to drive back home.  This is what we were greeted with.  I swear, only in Texas is it 70 degrees on a Friday, then mid blizzard on Saturday night.  Pathetically, I didn’t have an ice scraper, so I used a neon green, disposable, foam flip flop from my pedicure the day before.  Hahahhhaha, it was so sad and so funny at the same time.  I died laughing at myself (in the cold, while scraping snow and ice with a foam flip flop.)  I am going to struggle in Chicago :)

Phew, what a crazy week and a half!  And phew, what a long blog post!  If you’re still reading, I am totally impressed.  All in all, I got to spend time with some fabulous people, see some cool sights, and find our fabulous new home in Chicago!  Hooray!
